It has been exactly three years since the world went on lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Has the world been the same ever since? No, and probably it never will be. While the repercussions have been severe and permanent, many variants of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) have come and gone. It started with the Delta version and then came Omicron a year later. Meanwhile, mankind slowly tried to move on and started getting back to normal. But it seems the novel coronavirus is now back in India and we once again need to be alarmed.
As per latest reports released by the Indian Health Ministry, the country has been seeing a surge in daily Covid-19 cases, with as many as 1590 new cases being reported in only 24 hours, the number that is highest in the last 146 days. Currently, the number of active cases is also scary, which is a whooping 8600. The states most affected presently are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand. Six new fatalities have also been reported (3 from Maharashtra and 1 each from the rest) and the total death toll from 2020 in India now stands at 4,47,02,257.
Although the current active cases account for only 0.02 percent of the total cases, the daily positivity rate of 1.33 percent and weekly positivity rate of 1.23 percent has raised concerns among health officials.
Fortunately, the national recovery rate is promising with 98.79 percent, which means 4,41,62,832 people reported to have suffered from the virus have recovered. As for the fatality rate, it stands at 1.19 percent currently. In addition, the health ministry has also reported that so far 220.65 crore doses of Covid-19 preventive vaccines have been administered across India, with it continuing regularly.
Experts believe that the cases are on the rise in Maharashtra and Karnataka because they happen to be job and business hubs with regular travellers visiting. Rajasthan on the other hand has seen rise in Covid-19 cases because they have repeatedly failed to keep up with the precautionary measures. As for Uttarakhand, it is largely tourist-based, as a result people from not only India but also the world visit it all round the year. And as we all know, more different kinds of people come in contact, more does the virus spread. Interestingly, Tamil Nadu too have joined the list and has recently reported 88 new cases with the total case in the state now standing at 549. Delhi too reported 152 new cases while Madhya Pradesh reported 5.
