Three dimensional (3D) printing is a new technology that lets us create 3D objects based on a model design. It emerged from 'Rapid Prototyping' technology which originated in the 1980s. 3D printing eliminates costly manufacturing process. Its applications are found in the healthcare, automotive, and housing industries among others. For 3D printing, a special type of plastic, known as 'thermoplastics' is used. It melts at high temperatures, so that it can be cast into different shapes. The plastic turns solid once the object is cooled. Technically, any material that will melt under heat and then solidify, can be used for 3D printing.
