The AQI conveys the severity of air quality levels in order to monitor the quantity of multiple pollutants, risks they carry and recommends measures to the public. It is measured on a numerical scale of 0-500. While lower numbers indicate safe levels, higher figures point towards hazardous levels of pollutants. In India, AQI calculation includes a total of eight pollutants for which the National Ambient Air Quality Standards and health impacts have been set. The pollutants include Particulate Matter 10 (PM 10), Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM 2.5), Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Ozone, Ammonia, Lead. At least three of these pollutants including one PM must be measured in order to be reported.
