Mother Earth is replete with 8.7 million species of plants and animals. This biodiversity is essential to maintain a balance in the ecosystem and sustain healthy living. However, only 1.2 million species have been identified so far. Unfortunately, with environmental deterioration taking place at a significant pace over the past decade, the balance in the ecosystem has been lost to a large extent. Many species on the verge of extinction today and human activities have contributed highly to the destruction of flora and fauna.
According to the Living Planet Report 2020, environmental pollution, climate change, species overexploitation, invasive species and diseases are the culprits behind the depletion of biodiversity. Our relationship with nature is broken and time is running out. We must take action to save our plant and its rich biodiversity.
