Many speeding vessels in the north Atlantic are threatening the lives of endangered right whales by invading their designated habitat. The recent reports of Oceana, a non-profit organisation analysed the speeding limits of ships from 2017 to 2020 and have concluded that this practice needs to immediately stop to protect these critically endangered aquatic mammals. Once numbered in thousands, the current population of eubalaena glacialis has come down to 360. Collision with ships are the major concerns of the marine biologists as it not only injures such baleen whales but also often ends up taking their lives. Two zones have specifically been reserved for the whales by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to safeguard them in places where they are expected and one where they are spotted. The WWF has also taken significant steps to protect these mammals by shifting the shipping-lanes in Canadian bay in 2003 that reduced the risk of ship strikes on the right whales in the Canadian waters.
