Talibans ruled Afghanistan till 1996 until the US military took over in 2001. Fast forward to May 2021, Talibans dramatically came back to power sending shock-waves across the globe.
When the Soviet invasion came to an end in 1989, Talibans or Afghan fighter refugees at madrassas in Pakistan took control of Afghanistan. They enforced a medieval form of Islam onto the commoners that mostly included subjugating women and robbing them of their rights. It did not end here. They also went on to host multiple foreign Islamic terrorists. With the advent of the new century, one of these terrorist organisations named Al Qaeda launched the infamous 9/11 attack on US soil, forcing the US military to defeat the Talibans in a four-month war. Thereafter, the US army got involved in a guerilla war with the Talibans until the American government led by Barack Obama realised that this continued fight is a waste of American money and resources and a continued friction with another world power China. Another decade later, the present American President finally removed the remaining US troops from the Afghan soil, wrongly assuming that the 300000 men strong Afghan army would be able to defend themselves against 60000 Talibans. But to everyone’s utter shock, the Afghan army dissolved, the commanders surrendered and the Afghan President fled the country, enabling the Talibans to quickly take over the country and continue with their former terror regime. On 7th September, the Talibans declared an all-male interim government for Afghanistan. Since then, nations like India have been trying to extract their citizens living in Afghanistan and common Afghans are fleeing the country to seek shelter wherever they’re welcomed. With Talibans now resuming complete control over Afghanistan, it needs to be seen whether they allow the export of terrorism.
