Waking up to a room full of chocolates may have been your fantasy, like so many children across the globe. So, when famous American filmmaker Tim Burton brought this dream to life on the big screen in his movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005, it was a sight to behold. The film had everything you could and couldn’t imagine: Trees, rivers and fountains made of chocolate and a TV that could teleport a bar of chocolate! Based on a novel by a British author Ronald Dahl of the same name, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a massive success at the box office. The film, which made $475 million worldwide, is a visual treat (literally!). As we get lost in the ‘chocolaty’ flavour of the movie, let us dive a little deep into the lesser-known facts about it.
Two versions
Burton’s movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is based on renowned children’s author Ronald Dahl’s novel of the same name penned in the year 1964. However, this was not the first adaptation of his book. The first screen adaptation of Dahl’s novel was made in 1971, by the name Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This movie was not received too well by the masses though. Burton made the second attempt in the year 2005. The movie starred the beloved actor Johnny Depp as the lead Willy Wonka, who owns the factory. It became a huge success and a classic too, thanks to the room full of chocolate treats that it featured along with a chocolate river with real chocolate flowing through it!
A fascinating journey indeed
The movie takes children on a visual journey inside a chocolate factory. One of our protagonists, Charlie Bucket, lives with the rest of his family, in not very good financial conditions. Willy Wonka, the other lead, is a mysterious chocolate maker who lives his life in solitude. One day, as part of a contest, Charlie finds a golden ticket inside a Wonka chocolate bar. A golden ticket means a tour of the chocolate factory and a lifetime supply of chocolates by Wonka. Charlie and four other children who won the golden ticket, embarked on a journey that changed their lives. Five children inside a chocolate factory with an eccentric Willy Wonka is how the story progresses. Comedy packed with some lessons on life and some heart-warming moments, this movie is a delight for the whole family!
