Some of the most fundamental academic projects one has to complete during the course of one’s studies is a thesis or a research paper, or both. They are usually submitted as the final assignment for a given degree- be it an undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree, or a PhD degree. In India, at least for state board schools and colleges, much importance is not given to teaching the craft of writing a thesis or a research paper. However, this is not the case abroad. Many Indian students studying abroad consistently claim that they find the assignments, or rather, the structure of assignments complicated to comprehend due to the lack of familiarity with it. So, it is extremely necessary to acquaint yourself with these academic concepts sooner than later. However, understanding the differences between the two can be a little confusing. Let’s have a look at some of the key distinguishing characteristics of both these formats.

Research paper: It may or may not be written to obtain a university degree or a qualification. Its main aim is to conduct research and write a paper which can help an audience learn something about the topic of the research paper.
What is its subject?
Thesis: A thesis further studies the primary statement of central questions or arguments given by scholars. It is involved in interpreting data for proving/disproving a given hypothesis.
Research paper: It focuses only on proving the one specific central argument. It studies a single statement extensively.
How long should it be?
Thesis: A thesis is much longer. One should aim for 20,000- 25,000 words (around 100-125 pages.) Thus, the time assigned for the completion of a thesis extends longer than a research paper.
Research paper: These are generally shorter- around 10,000-15,000 words (around 50-60 pages.) The time assigned to complete these is also generally shorter as compared to a thesis.
When is it completed?
