The Colosseum, one of the Seven Wonders of the world is a mammoth amphitheatre that was built in 70 A.D. in the Italian capital Rome. This massive stone arena was built to hold public games, mythological dramas, gladiator combats and animal fights in ancient Rome. The term ‘Colosseum’ is derived from the Latin word ‘colosseus’ meaning a colossal-sized statue and was built in reference to the statue of Roman Emperor Nero that stood tall near the site of the amphitheatre. It is built on a six-acre land and is 50 metres high, 189 metres long and 156 metres wide. The Colosseum had the capacity to accommodate as many as 80000 people. It was built over a period of nine years.
