Recently, India has been re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2022-2024 term. For the re-election, India received a staggering 184 votes out of 193, with 97 being the required number of votes for the majority. Indian representatives at the United Nations expressed their delight at this news. From January 2022, India will serve the council as a member for a period of three years.
The implication of re-election
After being elected as a member of this council, India now has the massive responsibility to uphold high human rights standards. The key element that member nations have to focus on is to participate in discussions and share their opinions, perspectives and solutions for combatting situations that violate human rights all over the world. These nations have to be pro-active when it comes to addressing some of the most concerning issues around the world and support those who come forward and defend human rights.
This is the second consecutive term for which India has been elected as a member-nation, with its current term set to end in December 2021. This would mean that India will not be eligible for a re-election for the next consecutive term.
What is the UN Human Rights Council?
The UN Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations whose primary objective is to promote and protect human rights all over the world.
The main job of this council is to intervene in situations which pose a threat to human rights, and assure individuals affected by them the fundamental freedoms they deserve like everyone else. It holds dialogues and discussions which seek to tackle such situations and gathers inputs from different countries. These sessions are held three times in a year, at least.
UNHRC membership
This council consists of 47-member countries. These members are selected after an election. Their membership term lasts for a period of three years. Elected members are not eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms. The member nations of the council are selected on the basis of equitable geographical distribution in order to ensure inclusivity.
