Every year, 20th October is observed as the International Chefs Day all across the world. This day is celebrated to acknowledge the contribution of chefs as artists of gastronomy and to celebrate their fine culinary skills. The day was first commemorated to remind professional chefs that it is their responsibility to impart culinary knowledge, a sense of healthy competition, networking and sustainability to the next generation’s aspiring chefs, with utmost dignity and assurance. International Chefs Day also focusses on encouraging youngsters around the globe to develop healthy eating habits.
History behind International Chefs Day
In the year 2004, Dr. Bill Gallagher, a renowned chef and the then president of the World Association of Chefs Societies, popularly called WorldChefs, declared 20th October as International Chefs Day. Since then, the day has been observed to pay tribute to chefs and their profession. It also aims to raise mass awareness about healthy food and their benefits.
Significance of International Chefs Day
Since the inception, this day is celebrated to educate people about giving up on bad food habits and replacing them with healthy ones and to promote professional cooking as a viable career option. International Chefs Day is also about honouring chefs for taking care of our tummy’s cravings. WorldChefs has been constantly working to maintain this awareness. In fact, in last few years, it has collaborated with Nestle Professional to conduct entertaining and interactive cooking and food workshops and shows to educate youngsters on the merits of consuming healthy food. There are also other chef organizations that participate in this celebration internationally.
Theme of International Chefs Day 2021
The theme of this year’s International Chefs Day is ‘Building Forward Together: Ending Persistent Hunger, Respecting all People and our Planet.’ It is the continuation of the last year’s theme – ‘Healthy Food for the Future.’ Chefs across the globe have unanimously taken up this year’s theme and have pledged to carry this idea forward, educate people and keep creating awareness about the positive impact growing and eating healthy food can have on our environment. They have unitedly resolved to produce as much food as possible that can be a step forward to ending famines in the underdeveloped nations. It is also about realizing that every human being has the right to basic meals and to find ways to meet their needs.
