Every year, 7th December is globally observed as the International Civil Aviation Day to make people aware of the significance of international civil aviation organizations in connecting the entire world. It also marks the importance of the autonomous UN body called International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for maintaining the safety standards of global aviation services.
History behind International Civil Aviation Day
In the year 1994, the contribution of International Civil Aviation was first recognised by the ICAO as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. However, it was almost two years later, on 7th December 1996, that International Civil Aviation Day was officially introduced by the United Nations General Assembly. Since then, this day has been commemorated all across the world.
Significance of the International Civil Aviation Day
International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated worldwide to make people conscious of the contribution of all international civil aviation organizations in the socio-economic and sustainable development of the world, and maintaining safety, efficiency and uniformity with respect to global aviation services.
It is also commemorated to emphasise on the role of ICAO in maintaining security, infrastructure (enhance air navigation), inspection, regularity and welfare of over four billion air passengers yearly as well as supporting 65.5 million aviation employees who generate more than 3.6 per cent of the global economy.
On this day, every year, ICAO conducts different events and activities like workshops, seminars, talks and make new official announcements about global civil aviation.
Theme of International Civil Aviation Day
ICAO decides upon a special five-year anniversary theme for International Civil Aviation Day that lasts for the entire mediating period. This year’s theme for the International Civil Aviation Day is “Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development.” It was established in the year 2019 and is scheduled to last till 2023.
The theme focusses on the impact of international flight services being the tool of global rapid transit network and leading to international peace and prosperity that is part of the Chicago convention. It is also part of United Nation’s Agenda 2030 that aims to create better and more sustainable future for the global population.
