Global shortage of energy resources has largely contributed to the climate change in today’s times. This is why it has become imperative to find alternatives, for instance sustainable energy conservation. To raise mass awareness about the importance of efficient energy conservation, India observes National Energy Conservation Day every year on 14th December. This day is also called Energy Efficiency Day.
Theme of the National Energy Conservation Day 2021
This year, the themes of National Energy Conservation Day, as announced by The Bureau of Energy Efficiency, India are ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav: Energy Efficient India’ and ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav: Clearer Planet.’
Moreover, the Union Ministry of Power has also commemorated National Energy Conservation Week from 8th to 14th December following the theme ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.’
History behind National Energy Conservation Day
In the year 2001, The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of India, the constitutional body that guides the government to create energy-saving policies and events, had implemented the Energy Conservation Act. This was followed by the declaration of National Energy Conservation Day. Since then, this day has been widely celebrated across the country.
Significance of National Energy Conservation Day
The objective of the National Energy Conservation Day is to make people aware of the necessity of energy efficiency and conservation. The day addresses the ways in which we, as a society, can judiciously conserve energy by substituting non-renewable energy resources with renewable ones and reducing the overall energy consumption.
National Energy Conservation Day also focusses on the fact that the only and most effective cost-saving solution to energy shortage across the country is conservation of energy. In fact, it is a more sustainable option that enhancing energy output.
How is this day celebrated?
On this day, every year, National Energy Conservation awards are conferred to individuals and groups (industries, manufacturers) who achieve energy conservation targets through innovative methods.
Many events have been organised by the Union Ministry of Power in collaboration with The Bureau of Energy Efficiency, India, to celebrate this auspicious day. These include workshops, debates and discussions on the consequences of Energy and Resource Mapping, that were recently set up by the Bureau as well as a national-level painting competition on energy conservation organised for the school students across the country.
Another important event, titled the Gram UJALA programme will be conducted by The Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) where LED bulbs (BEE star labeled appliance) will be distributed at a reduced price of INR 10 across 2579 towns and villages in five states, namely: Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
