The Nobel Committee has recently declared the winners of the prestigious Nobel Prize 2021 for physics. The eminent winners are Syukuro Manabe from Japan, Klaus Hasselmann from Germany and Giorgio Parisi from Italy.
The first part of the prize was jointly awarded to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann for their ground-breaking work in the “physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming.” The second part of this accolade was awarded to Giorgio Parisi in recognition of his work “for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”
What is Nobel Prize?
The Nobel Prize is regarded to be arguably the highest honour for intellectual achievement and contribution in specific fields. There are six categories for these prizes, namely: Physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, peace, and economics. Till date, the Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 605 to 967 people and organisations.
Apart from being one of the most significant academic honours one can ever receive, the recipients of the Nobel Prize receive an 18-karat gold medal as well as a cheque worth around one million American dollars. If there is more than one recipient of the accolade, the cheque is split. However, every recipient walks home with the medal.
History
A Swedish chemist, engineer and industrialist by the name of Alfred Nobel, in his will, bequeathed all his remaining assets towards creating five prizes (the sixth was be added later on). The Nobel Prize has been named after him. After his death, a committee was appointed for the selection of the winners. To this day, they use the same guidelines when it comes to assessing potential recipients of this award. The very first Nobel Prize was awarded in the year 1901.
Famous recipients
