If you are a Marvel fan or love science fiction, you might be aware of the concept of parallel universes. This theory has created quite a ripple in the world of superhero movies. It may sound far-fetched but the idea has its roots in science. It has fuelled the imagination of many artists. If the concept of parallel universe interests you, hop on for a bumpy ride! Let us find out who coined the idea of parallel universe and what it exactly means.
Parallel Universe: The inception of the idea
The year was 1954 when American physicist Hugh Everett III came up with the idea of a parallel universe. He was a student at Princeton University when he believed that other universes like ours exist. Like the many branches of a big tree, all the universes co-exist, interlinked to one another. The idea created a wave of creativity in the entertainment industry and the scientific community. People have derived all sorts of crazy conclusions from this theory. But is there any evidence to prove this theory? Let us find out!
Science speaks
Physicist Brian’s Greene’s book The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos published in 2011 debates the possibilities of other universes. He believes there might be an infinite number of parallel universes and, in turn, an endless number of us. He also mentions that recent discoveries in astrology and physics point in the same direction. The existence of many universes as a part of a multiverse might be possible. He also believes that relativity and quantum mechanics might be the key to understanding parallel universe. With more research, we might prove the existence of such a phenomenon. Currently, there is no clear evidence to support this theory though. Who knows, in future, you might be able to find your twin from other worlds!
Parallel universe and fiction
The recent movie Dr Strange, The Multiverse of Madness, was Marvel’s take on the parallel universe. Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse is another animated film by Marvel in which the lead Miles Morales is the spider-man of his world. He must meet with the spider-men and women of other universes and defeat evil. Sounds interesting? Go watch it! There is a growing body of work around this theory to fulfil your curiosity. Many shows and movies have used the idea of a parallel universe to create a plot twist. But you be careful and don’t get lost in the multiverse!
