The world is a strange place with unsolved mysteries, new found enigmas and unbelievable folklores. Sometimes, we tag them as scary tales, ghost/horror stories or urban myths. However, urban myths are somewhat different from the rest, in the sense that they are terrifyingly close to the real life, that make them all the more disturbing.
Urban myths are actually widely circulated stories that are untrue and lack the sense of authenticity, often having elements of horror and sometimes humour as well. They are also called urban legends. Here are 4 urban myths from across the world that can send shiver down your spine.
Kuldhara, the abandoned village of Rajasthan
Kuldhara is a small town in Rajasthan, that is famous for its overnight abandonment. According to legends, one fine day, the entire village of around 1500 people had mysteriously disappeared and never came back. Since then, the place is rumoured to be the heart of paranormal activities. Several investigators from around the world visited Kuldhara and concluded that the strange disappearance is still unaccounted for. However, they have found remains of unexplained footprints, shadows and noises around the village. This Indian urban legend kind of reminds one of the disappearances surrounding the Bermuda Triangle.
The Night Marchers of Hawaii, USA
The night marchers of Hawaii, also called “huaka’i po” in local Hawaiian, are presumed to be spirits of ancient warriors of Hawaii. Legend has it that if anyone encounters them and looks at them in the eyes, they will be immediately marked for death. If anyone comes across such a procession and identifies them, the right thing to do is to simply avoid eye contact, bow down and show respect. The best thing would be to just lie on the ground till they have gone away.
The Ghost Bus of Beijing, China
Believe it or not, the legend of the ghost bus of Beijing has nothing to do with a bus at all. It is about three of its passengers who were frequently seen wearing clothes belonging to the ancient Qing dynasty and boarding the last city bus of the day. Other passengers travelling with them had reported on multiple occasions that the three strange men did not touch the floor of the bus and seemed to be floating instead. Some even said that their legs seemed to be missing. Legend has it that few buses actually never completed their journeys and their drivers disappeared out of the blue. The myth became so concerning that the last bus of that route had to be permanently stopped as drivers didn’t want to risk their lives.
The Haunting Image of Kuchisake-onna, Japan
As per legend, Kuchisake was a Japanese woman tortured and abandoned by her husband. After her death, her spirit is believed to roam the streets of a Japanese town, wearing a surgical mask covering her disfigured face. If people encounter her on road, she asks them if they think she is beautiful. People can’t answer in simple “yes” or “no” as she takes those to be lies and tries to kill them in turn. Instead, when people give indirect and vague answers, they are known to have stayed safe.
