A study published in 2020 International Science Journal reveals that apart from consumption of fossil fuel, the growing world population and their food practices (both production and diets) lead to extreme climate crisis, as they release huge and increasing amounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane and other toxic greenhouse gases. With climate change threatening the planet, it has become the need of the hour to reduce carbon footprints.
This is why scientists, climate activists, environmentalists and the governments all around the world have been looking for sustainable alternatives. It seems like, they have come with a significant one, known as climatrianism.
What is climatrianism?
Climatrianism is a rapidly growing popular lifestyle choice that involves adherence to a diet focussed on reduction of carbon footprints. In this dietary regime, people choose food items with zero to minimum emission of harmful greenhouse gases during production. People who follow climatrianism are known as climatrians.
What does climatrianism promote?
Climatrianism promotes sustainability above all. With this in mind, it emphasizes on the inclusion of more and more locally sourced food items. This school of thought also promotes the consumption of fewer animal products and by-products. The proponents of climatrianism also suggest that people who rely a lot on animal protein, should not source their meat and other items from the factory farms. Instead, they should focus on local organic farms as they have lower carbon footprints. People are also encouraged to eat self-grown fruits and vegetables that are seasonal, fresh and easily available in their region.
What makes climatrianism unique and encouraging?
Climatrianism never pigeonholes people due to their food habits, irrespective of whether they are vegetarians, vegans on non-vegetarians.
The best part is, while climatrianism promotes consumption of fewer animal products, it is never advised to eliminate them altogether. Instead, the suggestion is to alternate between animal products. For example, one can have fish twice a week, eggs twice a week and meat thrice a week, instead of having all three together. This is a balanced approach towards diet which combines animal and plant-based food items.
In fact, when people adopt a climatrian diet, they consciously focus on food items that have reduced climate impacts. Also, long distance food delivery causes increased carbon emissions, that is another reason why climatrians grow and have local foods.
The goal is to not adopt any extremist approach but make small yet significant changes together as a society, to make a worldwide difference.
