By community in India, we often mean a religion, a language group or even a neighbourhood. While all these meanings are true, there is one more way to interpret communities. On the internet, when we talk of community, we are talking essentially of groups bound by common interests, whether these are hobbies or business. Going by this, community is all about connection. It’s not only an entity or a group of people, it’s a feeling of being connected to others, feeling accepted for who you are and feeling supported by the community.
Why is community important for kids’ mental health?
We’re social beings, and communities are meant to help us thrive.
How can you find communities for your kids?
To begin with, talk to your child. Listen, talk, observe and understand what matters to them.
Team up your kids with interest groups: Where would your kid fit in best? It could be a book club, a football team, an art class or an online group of coders. They would love sharing the activities they want to do with others who want exactly the same thing.
Align to your kid’s values: Many kids and teens want to volunteer or be part of a cause. Find out local animal rescue groups, other young eco activists, or similarly kind souls. Your kids would be contented, they would contribute to society, and perhaps even find a career.
