If you are a fan of comedy shows, then you don’t need an introduction about Chris Rock. Earlier this year, during the 94th Academy Awards, Rock was in the news after being slapped on stage by actor Will Smith during the Oscars ceremony. As it happened, Smith (who later in the night went on to win the Best Actor for his role in King Richard) smacked Rock when the latter had made an insensitive comment (called her “bald”) about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith (who suffers from alopecia). Now, the American stand-up comedian is back in the news for his latest feat. Turns out, Rock will soon be making history by becoming the first person and comedian to perform live on the OTT platform Netflix as part of its upcoming global streaming event. This yet-to-be titled comedy special will stream in early 2023. This live show will be Rock’s second stand-up special on Netflix following his 2018 show, Chris Rock: Tamborine. Netflix officials have been quoted saying how thrilled they were to announce that Rock had collaborated with them to entertain the entire world live. They deem the upcoming event to be a forever memorable part of Netflix’s history.
Apart from being one of the most iconic and distinguished comedic voices of this generation, Rock, aged 57, is also a reputed host of the Oscars. He is also a celebrated actor, producer, screenwriter and filmmaker. His filmography includes the movie franchise Madagascar, Top Five, Grown Ups and Spiral among others. He was also a cast member of Saturday Night Live, the comedy series from 1990 to 1993. However, it was with the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris that he had written, produced, narrated and performed in from 2005 to 2009, that he gave him international acclaim. His HBO talk show The Chris Rock Show where he interviewed famous personalities (film stars and politicians) was also a hit. The other HBO comedy specials that Rock was part of are: Bigger & Blacker (1999), Never Scared (2004), and Kill the Messenger (2008).
His preferred genres of comedy include observational comedy, black comedy, insult comedy, sketch comedy, sarcasm and satire. He talks about everything under the sun, from politics to pop culture to racism. His list of accolades ranges from three Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Album to four Primetime Emmy Awards. He is among the top 10 in Comedy Central’s prestigious list of ‘100 Greatest Stand-ups of All-Time.’
