Like most nations, India too has a strong defence system comprising of three arms: Army, Airforce and Navy. In order to find a job in any of these prestigious defence sectors, candidates need to go through an extensive screening process. Those aspiring to join the navy services, for example, have to qualify the tests for entry level-employment opportunities.
Every year the Indian Navy conducts a national level recruitment test for aspiring young sailors right after their higher secondary. This is known as Indian Navy Sailors Recruitment. The ones who qualify this test are eligible for entry-level job positions such as Artificer Apprentice (AA) and Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR).
This year the recruitment test happened in August 2021. Around 10,000 candidates sat for the theory paper as well as the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) across 31 centres in the country. Here’s everything else next years’ candidates need to know about this recruitment test.

Selection procedure
The selection procedure of Indian Navy Sailors Recruitment is divided into two parts: a written exam and a Physical Fitness Test (PFT).
The theory paper is divided into four sections: English, Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge (logical reasoning and current affairs). There will be 50 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The syllabus will follow any 10+2 curriculum.
Candidates will have to appear for the PFT on the same day as the written test. PFT will comprise of 3 sections: 1.6km running within 7 minutes, 20 squats and 10 push-ups.
Marking scheme
The theory paper has a total of 50 marks. There’s 1 mark for every correct answer. There’s no negative marking for wrong answers or questions that have not been attempted. PFT has another 50 marks. So, the total marks of the recruitment test are 100.
Mode and duration
The duration of the theory exam is 60 minutes. Candidates have to finish their PFT on the same day within the specified allotted time. The theory paper can be answered in either Hindi or English.
