Have you ever dreamt of playing basketball or taking a shower in space? Well, you will be able to experience it all in the near future, thanks to Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), a California-based large-scale, space construction company. It is all set to set to launch its space station hotel called Pioneer Station in 2025 followed by the next one, Voyager Station, in 2027. Space hotel: Sounds exotic, no? They are going to be, for sure. Read on to know more.
Holidaying in Pioneer Space Station
If you are a sci-fi movie fan, then you probably remember that scene from Apollo 13 (directed by Ron Howard, starring Tom Hanks) where pencils and tools are floating around in the universe. Something similar is probably going to occur in the space hotel called Pioneer. It is the first and the largest hybrid space station in the world powered by artificial gravity created from a rotating wheel made of elevator shafts. It will allow people to work, enjoy and live in space!
The 28-seater station will have living quarters that include a bed, a window with view of the stars and the solar system, flat-screen TVs, shower, and work area. In this space hotel, you will be able to move around as you normally would, rather than in a weightless atmosphere. Witnessing a spoon float through the air would be a one-of-a kind experience as part of this space holiday. That’s really intriguing. Okay, but how much would it cost to stay in this space hotel? Well, the cost remains undisclosed. However, it is likely that only multi-millionaires would be able to afford it initially.
Vacationing in Voyager Station
Hold your horses as your space tourism dreams are set to get bigger and better, thanks to Orbital Assembly's second space project Voyager Station. It will be able to seat up to 400 people including 100 crew members. So, what can you actually do at the Voyager Station that won’t be possible at Pioneer? Well, this ultra-sophisticated version of the space residence, Voyager, will let people fulfil their sci-fi dreams literally. In other words, they could rent out a 30 square metre suite for two people for a minimum of three days and maximum up to a month. And, as a young sci-fi lover, you can flaunt about having played basketball in space at one-sixth of the earth’s gravity on one hand while sweating out at the gym on the other.
Moreover, the company plans to build not only a hotel in space, but also business parks with rentable offices and research facilities with Voyager and Pioneer Stations. That’s thinking quite long-term, right? Now, all the glitz and glam of space travel aside, enthusiastic space tourists will have to shell out $5 million for a stay at the luxurious Voyager suite. Included in this amount would be gourmet cuisine and live concerts along with other aforementioned features. Hefty but aspirational for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, no? The construction cost for Voyager Station is expected to be $60 billion.
