Engineering is surely a field with an incredibly wide scope in India. In our country, only some of its branches such as mechanical, chemical, civil, etc. are well-known and popular amongst budding engineers. However, there is a vast array of distinct branches in the field which have the ability combine an interest/ hobby along with the practice of engineering. One such branch is sound engineering. Essentially, it is the process of recording, capturing, editing, mixing, reproducing and delivering any kind of sound with the use of mechanical equipment and specific digital devices. If your youngster flair for music and science, this can be the ideal career option for her. Read on to know how your teen can pursue a career in sound engineering after Class XII in India.
Eligibility Criteria
To pursue a bachelor’s degree in the field of sound engineering, the basic requirement for candidates is a 10+2 education with physics, chemistry and maths as compulsory subjects. They should also secure a minimum of 55 per cent in the Board exams. Some colleges also require candidates to take their entrance tests as a verification of eligibility.
Available courses and colleges
There are 3-year UG programmes as well as diploma courses (1-2 years) available for sound engineering. SAGE University, Indore and Garden City University, Bengaluru, among others, offer graduation courses. Diploma courses are available in Zee Institute of Media Arts, ZIMA, IIFA Multimedia, Mumbai Music Institute, Crypto Cipher Academy, Vishwakarma University.
What is taught in sound engineering?
The syllabus of a typical sound engineering course include: Fundamentals of Audio Engineering & Applications, Sound Design & Synthesis, Recording/Microphones Techniques, Studio techniques, Principles of sound, Art and Physics Behind Musical Instrument Development, the Power Of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Surface), Music theory & Ear Training, Basic Electronics and Decibels, Custom Library Development Sound Design & Synthesis, Audio Cables & Interconnections, Movie Background Scoring, Automation, Acoustics & Studio Design, Mixing and Mastering, Analogue and Digital Consoles
Career options
There are numerous career paths that a youngster trained in sound engineering can opt for. Here are some of them:
Sound engineer: Some of the primary tasks of a sound engineer include setting up and maintaining audio equipment, enhancing audio with required sound effects and fixing any technical sound problems. They usually work with music producers, musicians and singers.
Sound recordist: A sound recordist’s job is in conjunction with the production, crew members, camera operators, etc. of a sound/ film project. He/she has the responsibility of fitting microphones, monitoring sound output, etc.
Audio engineer: Also referred to as a sound engineering technician or an audio equipment technician, an audio engineer uses specific sound equipment to record, synchronise, mix and reproduce sounds. This can be for a pre-recording film production or even a live event.
Acoustic consultant: An acoustic consultant’s job involves the management of sound and vibrations in a built environment. This can be for a recording or a live event.
Mixing engineer: As the name suggests, a mixing engineer is primary involved in mixing and editing sounds/ music. This often includes manipulating audio, adjusting the volume of audio enhancing sounds with effects, etc.
