KVPY entrance test: All you need to know

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana or the KVYP entrance exam is a national level admission test conducted every year for the students who aspire to study general courses in Basic Science and eventually end up doing research in their respective fields. The conducting body of the KVYP entrance exam is The Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. Qualifying this entrance exam offers scholarships to students for pursuing undergraduate courses. This year the KVYP entrance exam is scheduled to be held on 7^th November. Here are the other important details about this admission test.

Eligibility criteria

All candidates must be Indian nationals with valid identity proofs.

For SA stream (for students of class XI)

Candidates must have successfully passed their class X board exams from any recognized Indian school board with minimum 60% for general students and minimum 50% for students of reserved categories.
Candidates must have studied compulsory Mathematics and other Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in their class X.
Students who are studying in class X but are yet to appear for their matric exams are also eligible. However, if selected, they must provide their class X board exam marksheet during the admission.

For SX stream (for students who passed class XII)

Candidates must have successfully passed their class XII board exams with minimum 60% for general students and minimum 50% for reserved category students.
Candidates should have studied Science subjects as part of their 10+2 curriculum (PCB – Physics, Chemistry, Biology OR PCM – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics).
Students who are studying in class XII but are yet to apply in their school finals are also eligible. However, if selected, they must provide their class XII board exam marksheet during the admission.

Exam pattern
Students appearing for the SA stream will have 80 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The paper will comprise of four sections covering four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Each of these sections will have 20 questions each. However, these four sections will be further sub-categorized into Part 1 (15 questions) and Part 2 (5 questions). The syllabus will be that of any recognized Class 10 Science curriculum.

Students appearing for the SX steam will have 120 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The paper will comprise of four sections covering four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Each of these sections will have 30 questions each. These four sections will be further sub-divided into Part 1 (20 questions) and Part 2 (10 questions). The syllabus will be that of any recognized 10+2 Science curriculum.

Marking scheme
For SA students, the total marks will be 100. The marks division includes 25 marks for each subject (Part 1 has 15 marks, Part 2 has 10 marks). The cut-off for 2021 is 45 for general students and 35 for reserved categories.

For SX students, the total marks will be 160. The marks division includes 40 marks for each subject (Both Part 1 and 2 have 20 marks each). The cut-off for 2021 is 43 for general students and 33 for reserved categories.

Mode and duration
The KVYP entrance exam is conducted online. Candidates can choose to answer their paper in either English or Hindi. The duration is 3 hours.
