Kids and young adults love to go cycling, and parents prefer it too since it’s good exercise and comparatively safer than an underage driver at the wheel. But after corona virus changed our lives, biking became unsafe. In this scenario, virtual biking caught the attention of the youth.
What is a virtual bike?
The virtual bike is a static bicycle with speed and traction controls, linked with an app, and a VR headset for the rider. Instead of the headset, one can also watch the same video on a TV or screen. The bike is what we commonly called an exercycle, a familiar accessory for health enthusiasts. The app has trainer technology, i.e., modes and instructions to help manage the difficulty level of the biking exercise chosen. Some virtual bikes have internet connected smart apps attached that allow a virtual bike race. It’s possible for a young biker to invite friends on the app, get on their bikes, choose a route, race, and even award the winner – all virtually – without leaving the selected corner of their house.
What tech is used for a home virtual biking setup?
It’s possible to complete a virtual bike setup at very low cost. If an exercycle is not affordable, any cycle that can be kept static will do. If one is not desperate for the immersive experience of VR headsets, it can be dropped. This means the only tech required for virtual biking are a device to download the trainer app, a screen, and a bicycle held in place. The app will lead the bicyclist on the route, motivate, provide suggestions, and even manage gamified experiences such as the race we just mentioned. The key factor here is internet connectivity, otherwise it will not be possible to stream the virtual route onto the device or headset.
Why is virtual biking so popular?
Apart from the fear of getting infected, riding a bicycle is also not very feasible with the mask in place. Most young people, especially students and young employees are bored with staying at home. Virtual biking is the perfect solution for them to workout, have fun with friends, and enjoy the feel of nature, without actually going out of home.
