Many youngsters dream of pursuing their higher education abroad. Studying abroad has a lot of benefits- the degrees earned abroad are given more weightage by employers, there are a vast number of specific course options available which may be difficult to come across in India as well as the fact that it is an enriching experience that makes individuals more open-minded. Preparing your youngsters application is the first step towards this. Yes, it can be a job that is tedious and exhausting, but it is crucial. Here are some tips which will help your youngster prepare a strong application.
Write a crisp statement of intent/purpose
This is one of the most important documents which make up an application. Essentially, it states the reason as to why you would like to pursue a specific course, how would it benefit you in the future, how will you be an asset to that university and your future plans. This document allows the admission departments to get to know the applicant better, and more personally. Ensure that your teen has written an articulate, crisp and honest statement of intent without any grammatical errors. Proofread it, and share your feedback with them.
Volunteer experience
A proof of voluntary experience for something like an NGO in the form of certification is sure to add a boost to your youngster’s application. This shows the university that your youngster is someone who focusses on extra-curricular activities and contributes towards the betterment of society. Encourage your youngster to dedicate some of their free time to an NGO. It will also be a great experience, and will help them in personality development.
Gather work experience
Some universities require the applicant to have had some formal work experience in the field they wish to pursue. For the same, they can be asked to include a letter of experience/ recommendation from the employer in the application. Encourage your child to gain some work experience if possible, especially in the same field that they want to pursue their higher education in.
Foreign language certifications
If your youngster is applying to universities in non-English speaking countries, foreign language certifications are a requirement. However, sometimes if the course is taught in English, it might not be necessary. Most public universities require international applicants to produce a proof of proficiency in their language.
