When it comes to science, diagrams are an integral part of learning. They are both an explanatory tool and a way for teachers and students to clarify what is not possible to represent in words. It’s important to explain to students from the beginning that drawing in science is meant to serve a purpose. Here are our suggestions to help you in the task.
Check your kid’s learning outcome with a science drawing
Start in a way that engages the child. If you are the parent to a child of 8 or 9, ask him or her to draw an insect. If they draw a spider or a cockroach with extra legs, take this chance to explain insects have 6 legs, and point out the usual body parts. For a teenager, ask them to label a frog dissection or a part of the human body carefully. Then ask them if they know what each part does. In both cases, the kid will discover what can be learnt through illustration.
Explain the difference between artistic and scientific drawings
Geometry is all about accuracy. Physics drawings are to represent ideas with greater clarity. Biology drawings are a way of showing that students understand the three dimensional nature of the subject matter. None of these drawings require huge artistic skill, they need not be coloured, but they should be neat, clearly labelled, drawn to scale if possible, most importantly, self-explanatory. If your kid is good at art, this is a chance to enhance these requirements by making the diagrams more accurate. If your child is not great at art, assure him or her that is not a roadblock so long as the requirements of the scientific drawing are met.
Demonstrate how they can remember better by drawing
Depending on the grade and age, ask your kid to go through a chapter in physics or biology, and then take a quiz on key terms. Next, ask them to draw around those same terms and repeat the quiz. They will realise that they remember the same text better once they have drawn it themselves.
Show teens how scientific drawings may be useful in future
Engineers, architects, designers and many other professionals regularly need to use drawings at work. Show high school students examples of advanced scientific drawing from the internet. Choose a topic that they like to inspire them. They will start drawing by themselves in order to communicate their ideas better.
