Since 9th March 1959 when Ruth Handler created the world-famous doll Barbie, it has been high on demand. Till date, most kids worldwide grow up playing with the doll. And now, Warner Bros Studio has released the first images, posters and official trailer of their film Barbie, giving it a long-anticipated screen persona. Earlier, in December 2022, the teaser trailer had been unveiled.
The movie is directed by American actress turned screenwriter and filmmaker Greta Gerwig and is set to release in the theatres on 21st July.
According to several media sources, the latest trailer reveals the marvellous world of Barbie Land where the iconic Mattel doll Barbie and her boyfriend Ken live in harmony, before being attacked by external forces that push them to depart into the real world. It revolves around the themes of inner beauty, inclusivity and diversity.
In the film, the role of Barbie will be played by Australian actress Margot Robbie, while Canadian actor Ryan Gosling of La La Land fame will portray the role of Ken. What is interesting is that the film will showcase Barbie and Ken in different versions. For instance, President Barbie and gymnast Barbie will be enacted by American actresses Issa Rae and Kate McKinnon respectively. On the other hand, diplomat Barbie will be played by Irish actress Nicola Coughlan and American actress Alexandra Shipp will be enacting the writer Barbie’s character. Guess who will be journalist Barbie? Well, that will be British actress Ritu Arya, while doctor Barbie will be played by none other than US origin Hari Nef. Physicist Barbie will be portrayed by French-British actress Emma Mackey, while Albanian singer Dua Lipa has been signed to play the role of mermaid Barbie. American actress of Little Women fame Ana Cruz Kayne will play judge Barbie and finally Scottish actress Sharon Rooney has bagged the role of lawyer Barbie.
Some of the different versions of Ken will be portrayed by the likes of Rwandan-Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa, Canadian actor Simu Liu, British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir and Hollywood star Scott Evans.
Several human characters will also be part of the film. The cast includes US origin America Ferrera, child artist Ariana Green blatt, Hollywood actor Will Ferrell and English actor-model Connor Swindells (as an intern), legendary English actress Helen Mirren as the narrator.
Talking about the romantic comedy, director Greta Gerwig has reportedly said that it was one of her toughest projects as she did not know where to start or end, considering the icon that Barbie is. The film was conceived in 2016 and its shooting initiated from 2022.
