Empathy is the capacity to consider a situation from another person's perspective and take that experience into account. But children aren't born with empathy, it is a value that develops as they are taught with age. It depends on their experience and environment and how parents impart these values in their day-to-day lives. By modelling compassion, parents can make a big difference in how children communicate with their peers. Building empathy encourages tolerance and acceptance of others while promoting good mental health and social harmony. In this video, Dr. Bhavna Barmi, a mental health and behavioural sciences expert, talks about how empathy and compassion are detrimental to the emotional development of children.
