Stem cells are cells that can divide and renew themselves, generating more known as daughter cells. No other cell in the human body has the ability to produce new ones. Stem cells are currently used in India to treat various health conditions like blood cancer, and other blood disorders. This is known as bone marrow transplant or haematopoetic stem cell transplant. Research is going on to find out what other diseases that can be treated with stem cells. However, all of these cells cannot be used to treat ailments. Only those from bone marrow or umbilical cord blood are routinely used for therapeutic purposes now.
