3 predictions that the movie Wall-E got right!
Who doesn’t love an animated movie that is filled with funny characters, hilarious situations and sometimes, even leaves its audience with something to ponder over? Well, the movie that we are about to talk about doesn’t quite fit the bill, but was a blockbuster nevertheless. You might be aware of the famous movie Wall-E, an animated Disney Pixar film that released in 2008. While being funny, the movie directed by Andrew Stanton was also far ahead of its times.
The plot of the movie follows our lead protagonist, a cute little robot called Wall-E, who is sent to Earth on a cleaning mission from a spaceship. The spaceship is full of humans who managed to get on it and escape Earth. Wall-E's mission involves cleaning the mountains of waste and debris created by humans that have now covered the entire planet, making it uninhabitable. This is why all the people were lifted off Earth to live in space in a giant spacecraft. During one of his cleaning sessions, Wall-E finds a small sapling. After that, he embarks on an adventurous journey that saves humans from mindlessly travelling in space! Here are some predictions this futuristic film made that are so relevant to current times.
Prediction 1: An obesity pandemic and self-driven vehicles
The Wall-E movie depicts all human beings on the spaceship as fat and chubby for a reason. In the real world, statistics show that global obesity rates are rampantly increasing. Just like in the movie, everybody is growing fat because they no longer have to do anything manually. Nobody even walks, or does any activity, as there are machines and robots to do everything for them. In fact, they are driven around in self-driving hoverchairs, much like our Tesla self-driving cars, isn’t it? The imaginary trajectory of the movie’s story is eerily similar to where mankind is heading. Brownie points to the script writer and directors for bringing this impending doom so beautifully to the silver screen!
Prediction 2: People permanently escaping into space
The movie shows people cruising around the universe in a spaceship. People had to buy tickets to board this spaceship while leaving Earth, and only those who were wealthy enough could purchase the tickets. So, what happened to those who could not purchase the tickets? Something the movie has left for us to imagine! Drawing parallels to our reality today, you might be aware of the countless space missions being conducted by space companies like Virgin. These missions carry people to space as a trial, in the hopes of establishing colonies on the Moon or maybe even Mars. Who knows! If global warming continues at the current pace, Earth will become too hot for human survival, and just like the movie, escaping into space on a spacecraft might be our only way of survival! Another creepy, but very possible reality, isn’t it?
Prediction 3: Plants saving mankind from extinction
In the movie, Wall-E finds a small sapling, which turns out to be the gamechanger for mankind’s survival. The plant becomes a wake-up call for the passengers on the spaceship. The passengers are reminded of their lives on Earth and decide to fight back and reclaim their planet. Similarly, scientists have predicted that unless we manage our solid waste better and take care of our ecosystems, we are going to be doomed by global warming. Once again, the movie really saw ahead of its times, beyond not just the problem, but also the solution for the same!
The movie had a hidden message of reducing waste, planting trees and in general, saving the Earth amid the fun take on what happened to mankind!
