Baskin Robbins, the popular ice cream brand has made a global name for itself. We bet you have sampled their unusual bubble-gum flavoured ice cream! In fact, its list of never-ending delicious flavours and custom-made pink spoons are well-known among all ice cream lovers across the world! However, apart from its unique flavours, the brand also has an eye-catching logo, that contains a clever secret hidden from us. Today, let’s uncover what’s hiding behind the logo.
How did Baskin Robbins come into being?
In the year 1944, Irvine ‘Irv’ Robbins opened his Snowbird Ice Cream shop in Glendale, California. Having worked at his father’s ice cream shop during his teens, Irv had some experience selling in ice creams. He started with 21 flavours of high-quality ice cream.
Inspired by his venture, the following year, his brother-in-law and ice cream connoisseur Burton ‘Burt’ Baskin, launched his own ice cream chain in Pasadena, California, called Burton’s Ice Cream Shop. He was a Lieutenant in the American Navy and used to make ice creams for his fellow soldiers. Once the war ended, he decided to get busy and entrepreneurial and to make money selling ice creams.
By 1949, they had 40 stores in Southern California between them. But, when both of these start-ups turned out to be immensely popular among the locals, the two entrepreneurs decided to merge their businesses in order to enhance the brand’s name and value. Voila, meet Baskin Robbins! In 1953, the duo Baskin and Robbins ended up launching Baskin Robbins that soon crossed California and reached other parts of the USA.
BR logo and its secret
The duo introduced a speciality that was never experienced by Americans before; they offered 31 different flavours for each day of the month. Mouth-watering, right? The owners were so proud of their first-of-a-kind idea that they wanted to brag about it in front of their competitors. As a result, they added the number 31 (in pink) right above their logo that read ‘Baskin Robbins Ice Cream’in blue.
Until 1991, this remained the signature logo for the company. However, soon they dropped the Ice Cream part and renamed their chain as simply ‘Baskin Robbins’ and sandwiched the number 31 cleverly at the bottom. In 2006, the logo was further modernised and the number 31 more camouflaged. Today, if we look closely, we can observe that the pink parts of B and R make up the number 31.
The brand-new version of the Baskin Robbins logo
In 2022, Baskin Robbins, for the first time since 2006, did a slight makeover of their logo where the designers have simply swapped out the blue portion for brown and made the front a tad bit stylish and playful as compared to its older versions. However, the logo still reflects their speciality, that is the number 31, for 31 flavours in pink, while the rest of the B and R has now turned into brown. Believe it or not, Baskin Robbins has created over 1000 unusual flavours till date. However, they still hold on to the number 31 as it reflects their brand’s yummy legacy. Talk about keeping up with tradition!
