We are all scared of something and sometimes this fear is irrational, persistent or even obsessive. This is what is known as phobia. A wide range of phobias is experienced by people all over the world and some of them are actually weird. Here is a list of a few of them.
Deipnophobia (fear of dinner conversations)
People with this phobia have the fear of conversations at banquet or dinner parties. There are many who dislike stilted small talks over the table. For people suffering from deipnophobia, the prospect of a dinner party tete-a-tete is no less than terrifying. This phobia is usually accompanied by the more common phobia of eating out in public.
Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)
This is the inordinate fear of vomiting, especially in public. While almost all of us hate vomiting and even feel embarrassed when we puke in public, be it as a result of food poisoning or mere indigestion, we have all felt sick at some point or the other in our lives. However, emetophobics are outrightly terrified of vomiting and consider their condition so serious that they even undergo therapy to cure it.
Aurophobia (fear of finding gold)
We normally associate phobias with things that might potentially harm us, say heights, darkness or poisonous snakes. But there are some people who are terrified of good things in life, for instance finding a stack of gold or treasure and the possibility to own them.
Pogonophobia (fear of beards)
While most people are fond of beard and consider it a style statement, there are some who are terrified by it. In fact, the longer or denser the beard, the more terrifying they are for pogonophobics. It’s not like they just dislike the bristle, they tend to run away from it.
Somniphobia (fear of falling asleep)
One of the strangest and rarest phobias in the world is somniphobia, in which people are actively scared to fall asleep. While most of us eagerly wait for an opportunity to sleep, there are some who are not only anxious of falling asleep but spend their awake moments thinking about when they are going to lose consciousness.
