The Recording Academy is a musical academy in the United States which includes acclaimed musicians, producers, sound engineers and other professionals in music. The trophy is made out of gold to resemble a gilded gramophone. This award ceremony takes place annually, usually at the beginning of the year in January. Grammy Awards 2022, which is scheduled for January next year, will mark its 64th year this time.
History of the Grammy awards
The committee members of Hollywood’s famous Walk of Fame were keen on establishing a platform like the Oscars, but with the objective of recognising musical talent. This is how the concept of Grammy awards came about. The very first Grammy awards show was held jointly in Los Angeles and New York on May 4, 1959 during which a total of 28 Grammys were awarded. Walk of Fame is a significant landmark in Los Angeles which bears the names of some of the most talented actors, musicians, directors, etc.
Categories in the Grammy awards
The four main categories are Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Apart from these, there are multiple more categories as well which cover all the fields of music, starting from production to music videos. The number of categories usually varies depending on the year. The 2021 Grammys had a total of 84 categories.
The Grammy selection process
The members of the Recording Academy, music labels or the artists themselves first send in their entries for consideration. Then, the Recording Academy ensures that these entries meet the eligibility criteria, and are then categorised depending on the genre they belong to. The members of the Academy then have to cast their vote in order to shortlist five nominees for any given category. After this, another round of voting is held to determine the final winners in each category. The voters can only vote for those categories which fall in the field of their expertise.
