If you are someone who is fond of chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers, then you are probably a fan of s’more. This sugary snack, that comes with all these three together, looks like a sandwich comprised of roasted marshmallows and chocolate placed in between two graham crackers. In fact, it is a traditional camping snack usually made by the campfire. In India, if you are craving s’more, you have to turn to brands like Hershey’s, Chips Ahoy! and Marshmelts.
S'more: Decoding its unique name
If you have ever had the opportunity of snacking on this sweet, warm, gooey, delicious snack, you would know that it leaves you wanting more. Turns out, this is exactly why it was named as s’more. Are you still confused? Well, let us break it down for you. S’more, as it turns out, is the contraction of the phrase ‘some more’ implying that the three-in-one snack is so tasty, that whoever tastes it, irrespective of their age, ends up craving some more. How fascinating is that!
Interestingly, the story doesn’t end here. The first known recipe of the snack can be traced back to a 1927 American booklet called Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. It is believed to have been composed by Loretta Scott Crew (a girl scout leader) who mentions both the names ‘graham cracker sandwich’ and ‘some more’, but never s’mores! However, what it did mention about the treat is interesting: Though it tastes like ‘some more’ one is enough! If you really think about it, the implication was to caution people against overindulgence. After all, this rich goodie was known for its addictive quality, thanks to its tasty ingredients.
Are you now thinking what we are thinking? How on earth did some more turn into s’more and how did the name become so popular? Well, the credit goes to author and food expert Willaim Henry Gibson who, in his 1938 guidebook Recreational Programs for Summer Camps coined the term ‘s’more’. However, it wasn’t until 1956 when the original recipe was leaked by a global magazine that s’more received its due recognition. Guess how the magazine described s’more? A sandwich of two graham crackers, toasted marshmallows and ½ chocolate bar!
How is s’more made?
As the story goes, girl scouts across USA often used to go on summer camps and during the 1920s the trend of making s’more kicked off. However, back then, it didn’t really have this unique name.
So, here’s what they did. At first, they would take a few marshmallows and roast them in open fire until they turned gooey. Then they would melt chocolate bars that they carried with them as snacks and together pour the gooey marshmallow and molten chocolate in between two graham crackers, giving it the appearance of a sandwich.
