Celebrated as one of the most prominent industrialists of India, Ratan Tata celebrates his 84th birthday today on December 28. The current chairman emeritus of the Tata Group has received numerous accolades throughout his career not only in India but all over the world. Tata is also known for contributions towards the betterment of society as a philanthropist. Read on to know some interesting facts about this business tycoon.
Ratan Tata is also an architect and a pilot
It won’t be an exaggeration to say that Tata’s talents go beyond business. His love for flying encouraged him to become a licensed pilot. In fact, he was the very first Indian civilian to fly the F-16 (or the Fighting Falcon) in 2007. Today, he is the owner of a private jet which he occasionally takes out for a spin. Also, before entering business, he worked as an architect for a couple of years. Along with being a Harvard alumnus, Tata also received a degree for architecture from Cornell University.
His first job was not very glamourous
After completing his business education at Harvard, Tata was offered a job by IBM. Instead, he chose to stick to his roots and contribute to the family business of Tata Steel. His first job did not include an office with glass windows overlooking the city skyline. Interestingly, his humble career witnessed Tata shovelling limestone into a furnace! Tata was also granted the responsibility of handling the furnace as well.
Tata loves furry friends
Ratan Tata has always been extremely fond of dogs and is the parent to a German Shepherd named Tito. This is well-documented on his Instagram handle. In fact, the headquarters of Tata Sons, which is located in Mumbai, has always provided a safe haven to strays during the city’s harsh rains. There is also a separate play area for dogs with toys, food and water.
Tata holds the title of ‘Sir’
The Queen of England conferred the prestigious Knight Grand Cross to Tata in 2014. This was in recognition of his services to strengthen ties between India and the UK, his philanthropy as well has his multiple investments in the UK. The recipients of this honorary title are deemed as ‘Sir.’
