Human solidarity is considered to be a bond of unity or agreement between individuals or groups who are united around a common goal and provide mutual support and care to one another. It works best when there is mutual understanding and respect for each other’s circumstances and needs.
Every year, International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD) is widely observed all around the globe on 20th December, to create awareness about the need for universal human solidarity. It is the United Nation’s effort to sustain ‘unity in diversity’.
Theme for International Human Solidarity Day
The theme of International Human Solidarity Day remains the same every year. It is centred around ensuring human and social development through practices like socio-political and moral justice, cultural equality and cooperation through education, especially with respect to the developing nations. History behind International Human Solidarity Day
On 20th December 2002, a World Solidarity Fund was created by the United Nations General Assembly to mitigate global poverty.
Within three months, in February 2003, World Solidarity Fund was included as part of the Trust Fund, that was in turn part of the United Nations Development Programme.
Following these, on 22nd December 2005, the General Assembly body of the United Nations declared ‘solidarity’ as the most fundamental aspect of human relationships, as per their Revolution 60/209.
As a result, the United Nations unanimously decided to declare 20th December as the International Human Solidarity Day. Since then, every year this day has been commemorated to address the importance of solidarity, ensure equality and social justice amidst diverse cultures globally.
