If you are an anime fan, you must be familiar with the immensely popular Japanese anime series called My Hero Academia. And recently, the OTT giant Netflix has announced that it will adapt the superhero manga series into a live-action film for its platform. In fact, with this, it will only be the second anime adaptation of Netflix, following the 2020 release of Death Note.
From what is known so far, this much-anticipation film adaptation will be co-produced by Netflix and Legendary Entertainment, a renowned banner that had earned the rights to My Hero Academia back in October 2018. As per latest reports, the film is presently under production and will be directed by distinguished Japanese filmmaker Shinsuke Sato, best known for Alice in Borderland. With My Hero Academia’s Netflix adaptation, it will mark Sato’s English language debut. As for the screenplay, the writer of two celebrated anime series Obi-Wan Kanobi and Army of the Dead by the name Joby Harold has been roped in by Netflix. The cast of the film are yet to be finalised.
Now for those unaware, My Hero Academia revolves around the world of quirk-free (having no extraordinary ability) superhero fanboy named Deku, the alias of Izuku Midoriya, whose lifelong dream and ambition of joining U.A. High School, the prestigious hero training academy (where more than 80 percent attendees possess special powers or unique talents) gets shattered due to his plain personality. However, the way he overcomes his failure and accomplishes one feat after another following his chance encounter with the legendary hero All Might, is all the anime series is about. In fact, soon after this, Deku manages to become one of the greatest heroes of his generation.
The manga series was released in 2014 and has ever since been one of the most recognised works in the field. It is currently in its sixth edition. It is penned and illustrated by Kohei Horikoshi. Interestingly, My Hero Academia has sold more than 65 million copies worldwide, including digital renditions.
Apart from the Netflix adaptation, the Japanese manga series is also believed to have a theatrical release across Japan. It will be produced and distributed by Toho Co. Limited.
