School education has undergone a paradigm shift during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducting and attending online classes has been one of the major differences in the pre-COVID and during COVID times. Virtual mode of learning has its own set of pros and cons though. One of the consequences of online learning is decreased attention span. Quiz-based gamified learning can be the answer to this problem as kids have a natural inclination towards quizzes.
Students have been known to actively participate in the learning process rather than passively receiving knowledge when teachers use online quizzing tools in the classroom. Many online quizzes include game-based learning, which allows students to compete with one another or with themselves. There are quite a number of free assessment tools available that can be used to conduct knowledge checks with the students. Here are two of them that teachers will find useful.
Quizizz
Quizizz is a game-based learning tool that can help students engage in meaningful and relevant learning experiences. It allows teachers to design fun and interactive quizzes and classes that are both teacher-paced and student-paced. Quizizz editor allows teachers to effortlessly create their own quizzes using a variety of question types: Multiple choice, open ended, polls, fill in the blanks and media-based.
Thousands of ready-made quizzes and lessons covering a wide range of subjects and grades can be found in the Quizizz library. Teachers may customise these quizzes to fit their classroom needs, change them as needed, add questions directly to the quizzes, and share them with their students. Quizizz gives educators a robust grading system that creates instantaneous performance reports, providing teachers with a gold mine of analytic data to utilise in developing remedial interventions and lesson plans. Teachers can share these reports with parents with a single click, keeping them up to date on their children's progress.
Quizalize
Quizalize is a gamified quiz creation tool that teachers may use to promote student engagement, participation, and learning. It can be used to create quizzes from scratch. Teachers can explore the internal library or Resources area of the Quizalize website for existing quizzes published by other teachers. They can use one of the two gaming modes, Play Leaderboard or Team Vs Team, to allow students to take quizzes live in class. They can also give the quiz as homework for pupils to complete at their own pace. To create a class for the students on Quizalize, teachers need to login with their teacher account and click on 'Add a new class' on the right hand side bar.
Features such as follow-up activities and text-to-speech make the Quizalize app more popular. For instance, teachers assess students' scores and identify learning difficulties while they take quizzes, and then provide follow-up activities and resources based on the generated data. YouTube videos, PDF worksheets, web activities, and other Quizalize quizzes are examples of these resources. On the other hand, the text-to-speech feature improves students' reading comprehension and is also a useful tool for language development. Students can select the language for audio output and enable text-to-speech for each question and answer in the quiz.
