The epic blockbuster of 2019, Avatar, blew people away with its unique storyline and mesmerising visuals. Apart from earning a staggering revenue of $2.847 billion (making it one of the highest grossing films of all time), the science-fiction movie also left its mark in popular culture and redefined its genre. Speculations about a sequel to this movie, which was a huge treat to sci-fi film buffs and everyone else alike, have previously been confirmed. Recently, the film’s director, writer and producer, James Cameron, has revealed some interesting details about the upcoming reboot. Read on to learn more.
What will Avatar 2 be about?
Cameron revealed only a few details about the much-awaited sequel. The most important one among them is that a significant portion of it is set underwater. This might be a nod towards the director’s fascination with water and the ocean. After all, he did direct Titanic too. Cameron also prefaced the same location for all the sequels which are to follow as well. According to him, the storyline will focus on the theme of family by exploring the relationship between Jake and Neytiri (the protagonists) as parents, along with their children. The second producer to the film, Jon Landau, has stated that the sequel will take a standalone approach. Thus, it is not necessary to watch the first Avatar movie in order to follow the second.
Will there be new characters?
The new setting definitely calls for new characters. Not much about them has been revealed yet, except for Jake and Neytiri’s three children. However, with a trailer anticipated soon, fans will get a brief idea about the rest. All the main characters from the preceding movie have been retained.
When will the next Avatar movie be released?
The Avatar sequel is set to be released in late 2022, around December. The production, however, has been underway for nearly a decade. It was supposed to be released this year. But that was not possible due to the coronavirus situation. Cameron confirmed that the third instalment is 95% complete, while the fourth and fifth are already underway, all set to be released within this decade. This means that at least those won’t come with a 10-year-long waiting period!
