When it comes to the most popular social media platforms amongst teens, there is no doubt that Instagram and Twitter top the list. However, many apps have been recently emerging with unique, niche features that call out to newer audiences. One such app that stands out and is currently the rage amongst teens is Clubhouse. But what makes it distinct from its counterparts, and is it really safe? Here is all about it.
What is Clubhouse?
Clubhouse was launched in April 2020 during the pandemic, and immediately started gaining popularity. Available on both Android and iOS, it is essentially an audio-based social networking site. This is its key feature, and sets it apart from other apps which are generally text, photo or video-based. It is often described as an interactive podcast, and hosts thousands of rooms which can be created by users. These rooms are usually based on a specific topic. For example, a Clubhouse room can be dedicated to the video game FIFA. Through an exclusive invite link, people interested in this topic can join the room and listen/ participate in the conversation with others only via audio. Once a username is created, it will be put on a waiting list until such an invite is received from another Clubhouse user. Like other apps, users can follow other accounts they find interesting and also mention their interests and hobbies while creating an account. Based on these preferences, rooms are suggested. Several popular personalities like Mark Zuckerberg, Kevin Hart, Elon Musk, Oprah, etc. also use this platform.
Is Clubhouse safe for teens?
Like all its other social media counterparts, Clubhouse too is a double-edge sword. It provides a great platform for teens to enhance their speaking and listening skills with others who have similar interests. Moreover, it is a great opportunity for those who hold reservations when it comes to talking via video to interact with numerous people at a go. It also helps online communities to expand their reach.
However, the app has also come under fire for not adequately moderating these rooms. It was criticised for its lack of safety features to monitor and block hate speech. Although it has a minimum age of 18 for its users, it does not have any feature to verify it. So, anyone can join the app. It can also potentially be used as a breeding ground for online abuse and cyberbullying. However, with newer updates, the moderator of a room can choose to accept or reject speakers, and even mute, unfollow and block them.
