In December every year, two major reports shed some light on the way we look upon sport persons. One is the Yahoo Year Review. It shares, among other data, the most searched sports personalities in India for the year, looking across data from various search engines, including Android search patterns. The other is Google Year in Search report, giving top Google search trends for the whole year. Both reports are out for 2021.

These are the sports stars that got most number of searches from India this year. Interestingly, Google, which is a global report and not a national one, named Neeraj Chopra as its most searched name from India this year. The next two names most searched on Google by Indians this year were Aryan Khan and Shehnaaz Gill. The owner of automobile and tech company Tesla, Elon Musk, came a surprising fourth, followed by Vicky Kaushal and P V Sindhu.
Who is the name common to both lists?
This data makes Neeraj Chopra definitely very important. He has been ranked within top 5 everywhere. It can be taken as a healthy sign that Indians are interested in something other than cricket from the arena of sports. But it can also be a result of media publicity over Neeraj Chopra winning an Olympic medal. Chopra’s win in Tokyo made him a household name in India. As he went around the country attending ceremonies and functions almost every day to celebrate the historic gold medal, Neeraj became the poster boy of Indian athletics.
