As with everything else, the COVID-19 pandemic suspended the functioning of all test centres allocated for important language proficiency exams such as the TOEFL and IELTS. These exams are an essential requirement for applying to universities abroad. This proved to be an obstacle for prospective students. Even with the test centres now opening up, it is becoming increasingly difficult to book a seat due to a high demand. The Duolingo English Test emerged as a proof of proficiency in English during the pandemic.
This computer-based test proves a candidate’s proficiency in English which is required to support a university application abroad. Unlike other language proficiency tests, there is no need to be present at a test centre.
It follows a similar pattern of assessment to the TOEFL and IELTS, and includes all four language skills- reading, writing, listening and speaking. For the speaking section, there is a video interview conducted which is recorded. This test can be taken from anywhere, on any personal computer, thus making it flexible for the candidate. It is an hour-long test for which one can receive results in a couple days. A candidate can score between 10-160. 120 is considered to be a good score. The test fee is 49 USD which amounts to around ₹3640, and the test results can be sent to universities free of charge.
How the test works
In order to sign up for the test, the candidate is required to share personal details and an official document as proof of identity, such as a passport. As with any exam, there are certain rules of conduct and documents required for identity verification. A computer with a microphone and a front camera, a well-lit room and a stable internet are a must. Moreover, using online and/or other sources to verify answers is prohibited.
Who is this test for?
If you are looking to apply to universities abroad, this test can potentially work as your main English language proficiency document instead of the IELTS or the TOEFL. Around 1000 universities worldwide, including top Ivy League schools accept the Duolingo Language Test. However, it is important to keep in mind that this test is fairly new and hence, not all universities accept it. It is always best to check the specific language proficiency requirements for your preferred universities.
