Netflix recently announced the launch of its new website which would primarily focus on making viewers aware of the most popular titles at a given point. This comes after the streaming platform’s decision last month to shift the way it ranks its top titles with a new ranking system. Have you ever wondered how these titles are ranked and why specific ones are suggested to you? Read on to learn more about this, and how the new changes will be implemented henceforth.
How will the new Top 10 website work?
This new website will list the Top 10 films, movies, TV shows, etc. based on which ones were most watched in their specific categories. This was essentially created to keep a track of how various shows are performing on the platform. Now, Netflix viewers will be able to check the top performing shows in their country (non-English and English) as well as the top titles in the other 90 countries where its services are available.
How is this different from its previous title rankings?
Netflix is of the view that the traditional measures of the popularity of a show/ movie such as box office, share of audience, etc. are irrelevant when applied to streaming services. Streaming has a completely different ballgame to analyse performances. This is because one of its fundamental objectives is the retention of viewership through consistent re-subscription. So, it believes that the most ideal way to judge a title’s popularity is by considering the total number of hours it was watched by subscribers. This also is a direct indictor of the overall member satisfaction. However, this would also mean that longer TV shows and movies will unfairly benefit from this. In order to avoid that, the service has decided to publish what it calls “speciality lists.” These will present the top-ranking documentaries and reality shows- both of which are generally longer in duration.
Which shows are eligible to be a part of this list?
All Netflix content will be eligible to be a part of the Top 10 list. This would also include licensed content as well as Netflix originals. The list will be updated every Tuesday after monitoring engagement activity from the preceding week.
Is this new website available yet?
As of now, Netflix’s Top 10 website is available in only two languages- English and Spanish. However, the service aims to make it available for other languages during the next year.
