With the year almost coming to an end, Wikipedia, world’s most popular repository of free information, has recently released its list of most visited pages of 2021.
Globally, Wikipedia is one of the largest online libraries for information storage and dissemination and reserves content on virtually anything. It is primarily driven by its regulators and contributors, who can be anyone from you and me. In fact, editing a Wikipedia page and tweaking information is considered to be one of the coolest unpaid jobs ever. However, the information is always verified and even dropped if found misleading.
At the end of every year, Wikipedia’s most viewed pages reflect the trends of that particular year, and this year was no different. Here are the top 5 most read pages on Wikipedia in 2021.
Deaths in 2021
Like most year, this year too, Wikipedia’s topmost visited page is titled ‘Deaths in 2021’ and has been viewed approximately 43 million times. As the name suggests, the page contains a list of all significant deaths that happened in 2021. The list contains information such as the names of the deceased, their ages, their nationalities and their life and works. The most notable deaths according to Wikipedia were Prince Phillip of England and television legend Larry King.
Elizabeth II
The Queen of United Kingdom and Commonwealth lost her husband Prince Phillip this year. Her page has been trending ever since. It was the second-most viewed page on Wikipedia in 2021 with more than 25 million reads. At present, Elizabeth II is the longest living and reigning British monarch of all times and is also longest serving female head of state in modern history.
Elon Musk
One of the world’s most famous tech entrepreneurs, Elon Musk, made it to the top 3 Wikipedia searches in 2021 with approximately 24 million views. The founder of SpaceX and Tesla managed to make it to the headlines almost every month of the year, be it for his controversial tweets or his shocking acceptance of cryptocurrencies messing with the market standards. He was all over the news be it for SpaceX’s accomplishments to Tesla cars’ new and innovative launch to his separation with his girlfriend Grimes.
Squid Game
Believe it or not, Squid Games started trending only since October when it released on the streaming platform Netflix and is perhaps the fastest ever in Wikipedia to reach this level of popularity with almost 21 million views within the last three months. This Korean dystopian series not only recorded the top 4 highest reads on Wikipedia but also became Netflix’s largest series ever. It became so widely popular because of its cutting-edge plot in which participants are engaged in highly competitive real-life adventures and games, where one wrong move may prove to be fatal.
Cristiano Ronaldo
In 2021, Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese football legend, became the first footballer and only the third sportsperson ever to earn dollar 1 billion in this career and hence managed to make it to the top 5 Wikipedia list of 2021 with a whooping 19 million views on this free for all platform. This wasn’t the first time Ronaldo made it to the Wikipedia top 5 list, in fact, in 2016 and 2017, he had secured 4th and 3rd position respectively for being the highest paid and most talked about athlete of the year.
