Ice lanterns
Crafty kids like making DIY lanterns. Adding a touch of ice to it will make it all the more exciting. Also, creating an ice lantern is an amazing STEAM activity for winter, especially for kids who live in colder climates. This activity also helps kids explore states of water from liquid to solid.
Materials required
- Artificial snow (made by freezing water until it solidifies)
- A big glass or jar
- Colourful marbles, crystals
- Craft papers
- A tiny LED bulb
How to
- Get your kid to take a glass or jar resembling something of a lantern and pour snow into it. Or, simply pour water into it and let it freeze in the refrigerator for a few hours.
- Once, the ice or snow is ready, it’s time to make the glass or the jar look like a lantern using decor items such as craft papers, colourful crystals and marbles.
- Finally, attach a tiny ready LED bulb inside it and let it shine.
Slime snowman challenge
Making snowman is among the favourite winter craft activities for creative kids. For them, slime snowman challenge is a fun and exciting STEAM activity that is fast-paced where kids can learn to compete in pressure situations.
Materials required
- Slime
- Pieces of carrot cut to look like a nose
- Big-sized buttons
How to
- Divide a group of kids into two teams.
- Next, ask them to use slime and try to make a complete snowman. The trick here is to try and keep the snowman solid and not let the slime melt until the entire structure is complete.
- Once the snowman structure is ready, have them give it a finishing touch with button eyes and carrot nose.
Ice magnifying glass
Kids already like using magnifying glasses to view tiny invisible objects better. So, it’s no wonder that an opportunity to make an ice magnifying glass will get them all excited, plus it will act as a unique STEAM activity suitable for winters.
Materials required
- Spherical shaped container
- Distilled water
How to
- Get your kid to take the ready distilled water and pour it into the spherical shaped container until it’s half full.
- Next, put it in the freezer overnight.
- On the morning after, remove the ice from the container and use the hands to slowly make one side flatter and the edges softer. This will make the structure look something like a big camera lens.
- Finally, ask your young one to use it to magnify tiny objects. They will be surprised to see how clear and prominent the magnification will actually be.
