The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chose Rohit Sharma as India's full-time Test captain recently. Sharma is a role model for many cricket lovers. However, not everyone aspiring to become a cricketer can make it as big as Sharma or Sachin Tendulkar. However, there are other reasons (which are good enough!) to take up this sport apart from the possibility of becoming the next superstar.
The game of cricket, like many other sports, offers a host of life skills, cognitive and fitness benefits. So, if your kid is enthusiastic about it, encourage him to hit the cricket field, but because he will grow up to be a well-rounded person. Here are the life skills your budding cricketer can learn from the game.
Patience
Cricket's detractors have been heard remarking on the duration of matches and how they can last for days. However, the length of these matches teaches patience, a key life lesson, to budding cricketers. Practising patience will help your kids learn to last longer in the tougher battles of life ahead. Cricket also makes them learn the value of not pushing themselves too hard, too soon. Competing for the rest of the matches in a cricket stadium or in life needs focus which can be developed by staying patient.
Resilience
This is a timeless life lesson that your kids will learn once they have participated in a few cricket matches. Things might go wrong in the prolonged hours spent with a bat or on the field. It's possible a ball will be hit wrong or it’ll slip through the fingertips. Hence, the game of cricket teaches children to be stronger than their failures and keep bouncing back with a better strategy next time. Just like a cricket field, resilience is a necessary attribute for success in life too. While watching a cricket match with your child, you may tell him that there will be times when things will not go as planned in their personal or professional lives. However, they would need to readjust the lens through which they look at life during such times and move ahead with poise.
Consistency
It's not enough to hit a couple of lucky strokes or bowl one fantastic overarm in cricket. What is required is consistently, minute after minute and hour after hour, over the course of a match. This is a valuable talent that will help your kid succeed in other areas of their lives. For example, success at work would need them to show up effectively and consistently on a regular basis.
