Geography Olympiads were started to stimulate active interest in geographical and environmental studies among young people. But why? It’s because Contemporary Geography is much more than mugging up names and places, marking them on a map.
How has geography changed as a subject?
In a world increasingly affected by unexpected climate changes and natural disasters, physical geography tells students about geo-physical processes such as plate tectonics, soil formation and climate. We have been leaving an effect on the world, and it’s often a negative one. Human geography deals with humans and their relationships and interactions with the environment. And political geography updates students about the global political scenario helping them realise how all countries are linked.
How does a geography Olympiad widen students’ knowledge base?
Participating in an Olympiad will help your kids make a deep dive into a subject while enjoying it. Trying out Hindustan Olympiad can be a good option. Students of class I to class XII can register for this national-level competition, scheduled to start from the month of March. This Olympiad will test a student’s skill and knowledge in all subjects including Geography. The last date of registration is 7th March. Participating in HT Olympiad can be an effective way of widening the knowledge base of students in this subject along with others. Here are some take-aways from a geography Olympiad:
Understanding natural forces and our relation with them: Kids realise how tides, heat and cold, wind currents and seasonal changes directly affect our everyday lives. It teaches them to value our resources, respect nature, and try to think of a more symbiotic life
Understanding and appreciating other cultures: A deeper study of geography teaches kids about diverse cultures form all over the world, understand how those cultures were shaped by geographical factors, and discover how similar we ultimately are. It makes kids more broadminded as individuals
Discovering the concept of global interdependence: Technological breakthroughs have brought the world closer together. But this also means our inter-dependence is higher. Export, import, and policies governing common natural resources literally run our lives and shape our economy. Kids realise this when they go deeper than the syllabus into geography
If we want our kids to be concerned about depleting resources and an increasingly polluted environment, they first need to know about it. Preparing for an Olympiad opens them to these global issues and teaches them to appreciate and conserve what Earth already has
