Teenagers have their own ideas about everything, including clothes. But they would not remain within the known boundaries of home and school for much longer, and you need to prepare them for the rest of the world. Corporate dressing is one way to get this process of growing up started.
Why are formal clothes important?
There is a direct connection between what we wear and who we are. Start with a little experiment. Get some comfortable formals for your teen, and get them to wear it. Once they realise they are looking good, encourage them by taking them out for a meal. You will notice a change in them as they realise they are being looked upon as a young man or young woman, not just a kid with mom and dad. Corporate dressing sets the mood and tone for work. It makes the mind calmer and focused, while the comfort factor never sinks to lounge level, so the seriousness stays on.
Why do companies prefer corporate clothing?
Some companies allow and encourage employees to dress freely. Some companies go to an extreme of corporate dressing, but that may not be so healthy anymore. Most companies implicitly suggest dress code. That means, most employees wear a particular type of clothing on weekdays and casuals on Friday. This is because they want to encourage a defined, professional dress code during the work week as that reflects their business approach. Simply put, no one is in the mood for wearing shorts on Monday, and no one wants to stick to the pinstripe on Friday.
Why is it important for interns and younger employees to follow dress code?
Conflicts can arise when some employees prefer to dress differently, and they stick out during a meeting or presentation. Explain to your teen that corporate clothing does not snatch away his or her freedom; in fact, it stops them from imposing their taste on the preferences of an entire company. If they present a professional visual image, they win brownie points automatically.
Another reason why dressing properly is important is that they never know when they may be required to meet someone from outside the company. Their image to the outsider will be the image of their company. And this matters in business.
