Make a piggy bank at home with your kids this weekend 

Most of us were given a piggy bank at some point during our childhood to make our little savings. But do you know that it has existed through centuries. Piggy bank was invented almost 700 years ago in the 15th century, when people used pots to hold whatever money they had. Metal was an expensive commodity at the time, and it was rarely used for domestic items. Household objects like plates and pots were fashioned from cheap clay known as 'pygg’. Therefore, whenever people had a few extra coins, they would simply drop it into their clay jars which they referred to as a ‘pygg’ bank or pot. The 'y' was later replaced with an ‘I’ and the spelling was changed to 'piggy’ at a later stage.

What you’ll need 

• Coloured paper 
• Glue 

• Pencil 
• Paper cutter tool 
• Scissors 
• Black marker pen 
• Paint brush 

• Plastic bottle 
• Acrylic paint (Pink) 
• Googly eyes 
• 4 plastic bottle caps 

How-to  

Here is a step-by-step guide to this fun activity. Help your kids follow them. 

• Paint the plastic bottle including its cap with pink acrylic colour. Leave it aside to dry. 
• Using a pencil, draw ears on the coloured paper and cut them out with the help of scissors. 
• Stick the ears on the painted bottle. Now, stick the googly eyes on the neck of the bottle. 
• Draw nostrils on the cap of the bottle using a black marker pen. 

• Paint the four plastic bottle caps and leave them to dry. 
• Stick the painted bottle caps at the bottom to form the pig’s legs. 
• Using the paper cutter tool, make a slit big enough for the coins to pass through. 
• The piggy bank is ready for use.
