Yes, students can start a blog too: Here is how

By Mansi Jain,

Blogging is a hobby that comes with a plethora of benefits for students.

A blog can help kids build an online community of people who share similar interests.

Starting a blog is not only a productive and engaging hobby to have, but it can also be beneficial for students in more ways than one. It can help them create a portfolio of their creative works and pieces while providing them an insight to their own abilities in regard to their desired career path. A blog can help kids build an online community of people who share similar interests. It can even be monetized. For getting your kids started, guide them to follow these steps:

Step 1: Choose the topic
Choosing a topic for the blog can be easy when your child keeps the following criteria in mind:

  • The purpose of the blog: This is very important to figure out. Seek answers to these questions while choosing a topic: Is it a journaling blog? Is this about giving advice? Do you want to talk about the society? Try to explain the idea behind the blog in a few lines.
  • Your area of expertise: If you pick a specialized content topic for you blog, make sure that you have a sound knowledge of the subject. The topic could be anything books from sharing personal experience to talking about books, music, ad anything else that suits your interest and expertise.
  • Unique selling point: Do your research and find out what kind of blogs already exist about your chosen topic. Figure out what your blog offers additionally in comparison to them.

Step 2: Select a name for the blog
Naming your blog can be a bit of a challenge. While brainstorming names, keep in mind that a blog name should be relevant to your topic, catchy and short enough that it is easy to remember. Make sure that your blog is unique.

Step 3: Choose a domain name and hosting
The domain name or the website link that will redirect people to your blog should have the name of your blog in it. If the name is too generic, there might be websites that already claim your domain of choice. After settling on the domain name comes the decision of picking a web hosting service. Blogs can be made using content management systems (CMS) or website builders.

  • A CMS is a software that lets users create and manage a website without needing advanced coding skills. Wordpress can be a good option to start with.
  • A website builder is a programme that provides customizable templates with all of the essential elements for creating a website, usually with a drag-and-drop editing interface. Squarespace or Wix can be good examples.

Do your research well about the paid and free plans and interface that you are comfortable using when picking your web hosting service.

Step 4: Customize the blog
All web hosting service provides a plethora of free as well as paid themes and templates which allow you to be in control of the look and feel of your blog. Using attractive colour themes and typography, customize your blog design so that it attracts readers from the get go. A website that isn’t pleasing to the eyes doesn’t succeed because there are so many alternatives available just a click away.

Step 5: Plan effective methods of promotion
Gaining readers can be difficult. Your blog won’t show up on the first page of results on Google from the get go. This is why, to make sure you get traffic on your blog, you can make use of promotional strategies through social media, search engine optimization features, creating an email subscribers list, etc.
